    When work is busy, it can be easy to lose track of your health goals.

    Don’t assume you have no time to pack healthy snacks or that it’s too expensive. If you use some of the shortcuts below instead of buying something while you’re at work, you’ll likely save yourself time and money. And, these nutritious options won’t leave you feeling sluggish by 4 p.m.

    Time-saving, healthy ideas include:

    *  Canned fruit (in juice, not syrup) with Greek yogurt

    *  Mini microwave packs of frozen vegetables

    *  Dried fruit and nuts – make your own healthy trail mix

    *  Pre-chopped fruits, vegetables and salad

    Did you know?

    Frozen and canned fruits and vegetables have the same nutrients as fresh. In some cases, they may be even more nutritious because they are canned or frozen soon after harvest.

    Drinks matter too.

    Do you reach for coffee throughout the day? Consider cutting back and replacing it with water. You could reap numerous benefits of reduced caffeine intake, including:

    *  Better sleep. Caffeine can take several hours to leave your body completely. This means that afternoon cup could be keeping you awake many hours later.

    *  Reduced stress. You’re sleeping better – and better sleep helps you cope with stress.

    *  More energy. Hydrating with water can fight fatigue.

    *  Less anxiety. Caffeine can trigger anxiety – or make it worse – in some people.

  • Stop Snoring

    Almost everyone snores sometimes. But some people snore a lot, and it may be disruptive to their sleep and those around them. Snoring may just be a nuisance, but it could also be a sign of a serious problem.

    What is snoring?

    Snoring is the harsh sound made when air vibrates the tissue around your airway while you breathe. When you sleep, it’s normal for your throat to relax and your tongue to slide back into your mouth. However, if anything obstructs the flow of air, you get vibrations known as snoring.

    The sound can range from gentle to grating, depending on the degree of obstruction or the specific structure of your airway.

    Causes

    *  Stuffy nose from a cold or allergies

    *  Sleep position

    *  Bulky throat tissue from large tonsils or adenoids

    *  Your unique mouth anatomy

    *  Being overweight

    *  Poor muscle tone due to age, alcohol consumption, or sleep deprivation

    *  A serious condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

    What makes snoring dangerous?

    Excessive snoring may be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This condition occurs when breathing is fully or partially obstructed for more than 10 seconds during sleep. You may wake with a snort or gasp and then fall back to sleep for another cycle of snoring, followed by breath obstruction.

    People with OSA often sleep poorly due to multiple cycles of apnea disrupting deep sleep. They are also at higher risk for high blood pressure, heart conditions, and stroke.

    Talk to your doctor if you or your partner notice you are frequently snoring.

    Warning signs for OSA:

    *  Feeling very drowsy during the day

    *  Morning headaches

    *  Gasping or choking at night

    *  High blood pressure

    *  Snoring disrupting your bed partner’s sleep

    *  Chest pain at night

    If your doctor determines you do not have OSA, you may want to try other strategies to reduce snoring:

    *  Sleep on your side.

    *  Avoid alcohol and caffeine at night.

    *  Lose some weight.

    *  Treat nasal congestion.

    *  Try devices such as nasal strips or nasal dilators.

    *  Explore ways to get better sleep.

  • Stop The Spread Of Respiratory Infections

    The winter months are a peak time for the spread of infectious respiratory diseases. Cold weather often keeps people indoors, where it is easier for infections to spread.

    Infectious respiratory diseases include the common cold, as well as other respiratory illnesses that can be more serious. Some people may be at increased risk of severe side effects from respiratory disease, including the elderly, children, and the immunocompromised.

    Preventing the spread of respiratory disease helps keep everyone in your family and community safe. A few simple precautions can make all the difference. Once you know how these diseases are spread, you can take steps to contain them and make this winter a healthy one.

    Airborne transmission

    The most common way infectious respiratory diseases spread is by small aerosols that become airborne when an ill person coughs, laughs, talks, or sneezes. These tiny aerosols can hang in the air for hours and easily travel to the lungs when inhaled.

    Surface transmission

    Contact with a surface that is contaminated with droplets from an infected person is another route of transmission. If you touch something that has saliva or mucus on it and then later touch your mouth or face, you can become infected with the virus.

    Close contact transmission

    Being in close contact with someone infected with a virus can result in exposure to large virus-laden respiratory droplets. In contrast to the tiny aerosols that can hang in the air for an extended period, larger droplets fall quickly and most likely to spread when people are less than 3 feet apart.

    Types of infectious respiratory viruses

    *  Chickenpox

    *  Coronavirus infections (including SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV)

    *  Diphtheria

    *  Influenza (flu)

    *  Legionnaires’ disease

    *  Measles

    *  Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)

    *  Mumps

    *  Pneumonia

    *  Pneumococcal meningitis

    *  Rubella (German measles)

    *  Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

    *  Tuberculosis

    *  Whooping cough

    Prevent the spread

    *  Minimize close contact with ill people.

    *  Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.

    *  Don’t share personal items such as food and utensils.

    *  Ask your doctor which vaccines are recommended for you, including the flu and COVID vaccines.

    *  Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow and tissues (not your hands!).

    *  Stay home if you are ill.

  • Take A Shot At Allergies

    Chronic congestion? Watery, itchy eyes? Sneezing and coughing? These may be symptoms of an allergy.

    If your doctor diagnoses you with an allergy, they may recommend allergy shots. For the right person, an allergy shot regimen may bring much-needed relief from frustrating and ongoing symptoms.

    The cause of allergies

    An allergy occurs when the immune system attacks an allergen. This creates mucous and the classic allergy symptoms. Allergens are substances that are usually not harmful, but the immune system over-reacts to them, causing an allergy. Common allergens include:

    *  Mold

    *  Pollen

    *  Dander

    *  Dust mites

    *  Grass

    *  Ragweed

    *  Animal dander

    How allergy shots work

    Each allergy shot contains a small amount of an allergen. When the immune system senses the allergen, it responds by producing an antibody. Antibodies neutralize and block the allergen from causing symptoms.

    In general, the goal of an allergy shot regimen is to reduce the body’s reactivity to the allergen. By introducing a small dose at a time, the immune system learns to identify and quickly neutralize the allergen. Over time, your immune system becomes more efficient and reduces allergy symptoms.

    Benefits of allergy shots

    Many different medications are available to treat allergies. However, for some people, those do not bring relief. Their doctor may recommend allergy shots as a safe and effective treatment to help them feel better. Shots may:

    *  Reduce allergy symptoms

    *  Reduce asthma symptoms for some people

    *  Reduce the risk of future allergies

    *  Reduce the need for other allergy medications

    Drawbacks

    Allergy shots are not for everyone. Your doctor is your best resource to determine the right treatment for your allergies. Drawbacks of allergy shots include:

    *  Possible redness or swelling at the injection site

    *  Potential for a severe reaction

    *  Requires frequent visits to your doctor

    *  Not appropriate for people with certain medical conditions

    *  Not used for food allergies

  • Telehealth: What To Know

    Telehealth or telemedicine uses video calls or other technology to help you see your doctor. This allows you to have medical appointments from home instead of going to the doctor’s office.

    Getting ready

    If you want to use telehealth, but don’t know how, contact your doctor’s office. Different doctors and hospitals use different apps and technology for their telemedicine appointments. Ask them for instructions on how to get set up.

    Before your appointment, check with your insurance company about coverage for telehealth appointments. Prepare a list of questions to ask your doctor so you’ll be sure to cover everything.

    If you need help

    If you’re feeling overwhelmed, ask a tech-savvy friend or family member to help. Usually, you only need:

    1.  A strong internet connection. Your connection needs to be fast enough for video chats.

    2.  A smartphone, tablet or computer that connects to your wi-fi and has a working microphone, speaker and camera. Most newer devices have all of these built in.

    Telehealth can be a safe and convenient way to have your medical appointments. Don’t be intimidated by technology. With a little help, you can be up and running – and it may become your favorite way to have your doctor visits!

    For some people, seeing their doctor from the comfort of their own home has made accessing care easier. But, for others, the lack of in-person care makes managing their health difficult.

    Telemedicine is unlikely to go away. As a patient, you need to know how to get the most out of virtual visits and when an in-person visit might be the way to go.

    Pros of telemedicine

    *  Fast and flexible access to care

    *  Decreased exposure to other ill patients

    *  No need to leave home when dealing with a minor illness or concern

    *  Less time spent driving

    *  Ease of follow-up for existing health issues

    *  Less time lost at work

    Cons of telemedicine

    *  Insurance may not cover video visits; check your plan carefully

    *  Not everyone has access to technology

    *  Diagnosing a new condition may not be possible over video

    *  Challenges in monitoring vital signs, like blood pressure, etc.

    *  Loss of meaningful relationship with healthcare providers

    *  Important symptoms may get missed

    Get the most from telemedicine

    *  Check your technology set-up in advance.

    *  Keep your doctor’s phone number handy in case you get disconnected.

    *  Write down a list of symptoms and questions.

    *  Write down measurements your doctor may need (height, weight, blood pressure, etc.).

    *  Have your medication list on-hand.

    *  Choose a quiet room where you won’t be interrupted.

    *  Be on time.

    *  If your doctor recommends any tests or follow-ups, make those appointments right away.

    When in-person is best

    Not every situation is right for a telemedicine visit. Here are times when in-person may be recommended:

    *  Pediatric visits

    *  Emergency situations

    *  Yearly physicals

    *  Situations where a physical exam is needed

  • The Facts About Donating Organs

    Thousands of children and adults are in need of an organ transplant. The biggest needs are for kidneys, followed by livers.

    Being an organ donor

    Adults over the age of 18 can register at organdonor.gov. Select your state and register. Organ donors who are under age 18 will need authorization from their parents. You can always go back to the website later and change your organ donation status, too.

    People with health conditions can donate

    Having a health issue doesn’t mean you can’t be an organ donor. People with many different health conditions have been successful organ donors. The transplant team can decide which organs can be used – and even one organ can save a life.

    Tell friends & family

    Sometimes a person is registered to be a donor, but their loved ones don’t know. Then, they don’t allow the organs to be donated when a person dies. If you’re serious about donating your organs, make sure you tell your close relatives and friends.

    Medical care

    The medical team who cares for a person at a hospital is separate from the organ transplant team. Every possible effort is made to save a person’s life, regardless of their organ donation wishes.

    No costs to an organ donor’s family

    Any costs related to an organ transplant are paid by the recipient. Their costs are usually paid by their insurance.

    Organ donation doesn’t interfere with funeral wishes

    Organs are carefully removed with surgery. People who are organ donors can still have an open casket funeral.

  • The Family That Plays Together Stays Together

    Playing games is an easy and fun way to experience quality interactions and build family connections. The more time you spend together, the stronger your bond will be. But, finding a game that everyone will enjoy can be a challenge. Here are eight games that are fun and accessible to a wide range of ages.

    Charades

    This classic game is super easy and sure to have everyone laughing. Even better, no one is too young or too old to play.

    Pictionary

    If you can hold a pencil, you can play pictionary. Whether your family and friends can decipher your drawing is another matter, but all part of the fun.

    Minute to win it style games

    The idea is to create a challenge and compete for one minute. For example, who can stack the most cups or keep the most balloons in the air? The options are endless.

    Ninja course

    Using your home or yard as an obstacle course creates many opportunities for play. Set up a ninja course appropriate for your group and compete in teams or race your personal best.

    Dominos

    You can play the traditional game or just imagine the amazing fun you could create working together with the whole family.

    Dice games

    Rolling dice is fairly simple for any age. Simple addition or pattern matching is possible for even young kids. Look for games such as Quix™, Farkle™, and Yahtzee™.

    Jenga™

    This game will test everyone’s dexterity. The simple rules mean young and old can get in the mix.

    Card games

    A standard deck of cards contains a wealth of all-ages gameplay. Try easy games like snap, pig, or crazy eights.

  • Packing A Lunch Punch

    Plan ahead and first wash your hands before packing a school lunch (or your own).

    “Think about the perishability of the foods you’re making,” said Rutgers University professor Don Schaffner, a food scientist and spokesperson for the Institute of Food Technologists. “Perishable foods can remain at room temperature for no more than 2 hours. Properly refrigerated foods can last a long time, but most school children won’t have access to a refrigerator where they can store their lunchbox.”

    The Institute offers some guidance for parents as they pack lunches:

    *  Start each day with a clean box or bag. Insulated, vinyl lunch bags are popular and do better at keeping foods cool than paper bags or metal lunch boxes.

    *  Clean out lunch bags using warm soapy water and allow them to dry completely overnight before packing the next day. This helps deter the growth of bacteria in the bag.

    *  Choose secure packing materials, such as sealable, single-use sandwich bags that can be disposed of when used, or reusable plastic wear that is dishwasher safe.

    *  As much as possible, opt for foods that are not perishable, such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. (Follow the school’s policy on peanut butter. It may not be allowed due to peanut allergies.) PBJs will last from the time you prepare it in the morning until lunchtime. Single-serve fruits in prepackaged containers are also great options because they’re less perishable.

    *  Encourage older kids to assemble lunch on their own at school. Pack bread in one container and place fillings like meat or cheese separately with a cold pack. Having kids assemble the sandwich at lunchtime ensures the freshest possible results!

    *  Cold packs are designed to keep foods and drinks cold, not cool them down. If you start with room-temperature ingredients in the morning, it’s unlikely the cold pack will be able to cool them enough by lunchtime. Instead, refrigerate items the night before.

    *  Always use a cold pack when you are packing anything perishable, like cheese and meat slices or fresh-cut fruit with a yogurt-based dip. Place the perishable food right against the cold pack in the bag.

    *  For hot foods like chili, soup, or stew, use an insulated container. Before storing the food, fill the container with boiling water, let it stand for a few minutes, empty it, and then add the hot food.
