    Staring at a computer, dry winter air, cold temperatures, allergies, medications. A number of things can make eyes red, dry or uncomfortable.

    Many people turn to a bottle of eye drops for quick relief. But, if you use eye drops often, there are a few things you should know.

    Seeing red

    Redness relief eye drops contain an ingredient that shrinks blood vessels in the eye, giving you that bright-eyed effect. But, these drops can be harmful if you overuse them.

    Using redness drops frequently can cause a “rebound” effect, making the redness even worse. Then you feel like you have to use the drops more and more to control the redness.

    Don’t use redness relief drops on a regular basis. If your eyes are often red, you should see an eye care professional to get to the root cause.

    Artificial tears

    Artificial tear eye drops are generally safe to use regularly. They don’t contain any active ingredients. Instead, they are designed to mimic your own tears. These work well for occasional dryness or discomfort.

    Keep an eye on preservatives

    Many eye drops contain preservatives. These keep germs from growing in the drops. They allow you to use the same bottle of drops for a longer period of time.

    Some people find that the preservatives in eye drops make their eyes itchy or irritated. If you notice any burning or stinging after using eye drops, even artificial tears, stop using them.

    Preservative-free eye drops are available. These work well for people who are sensitive to preservatives. They are usually in small single-use vials that come in a pack. You use the vial once and throw it away.

    Eye health red flags

    The best way to keep eyes healthy is to see your eye health professional regularly. Ask your optometrist or ophthalmologist how often they should see you. It will depend on your age, any health issues and your eye health history.

    Call your eye professional right away if you notice:

    *  Pain or itching in the eye

    *  Redness that won’t go away

    *  Dry eyes that aren’t relieved with artificial tears

    *  Changes in vision, such as not seeing as well

    *  Cloudy or blurry vision

    *  Floaters or other spots in your vision

  • Clean Cut: Cutting Board Safety

    Cutting boards are useful for all types of slicing, dicing and chopping. They can save your countertops and make meal prep easier. But without careful cleaning, your cutting board could contaminate your foods and make you sick. Every surface your food touches needs to be clean, especially those that touch raw meat, poultry and seafood.

    When to clean your cutting board

    For a clean surface, remember to wash your board:

    *  Before using it for the first time.

    *  After it has held raw meat, poultry, seafood, eggs or flour.

    *  Before switching foods and moving on to the next step, even if it’s for the same meal.

    *  After you’re done using it.

    How to clean your cutting board

    *  Scrub your board thoroughly with hot, soapy water and a clean cloth or brush. Then rinse with hot water.

    *  If your board touched meat, fish or poultry, disinfect it after you wash it. You can do this by using a diluted bleach solution. Combine one tablespoon of bleach with one gallon of water. Pour the solution all over the board and let it sit for five minutes. Finally, rinse it well.

    *  Let it air dry or dry it with a clean towel if you need to dry it quickly.

    *  If it’s dishwasher safe, put your cutting board in the dishwasher. Be aware that some cutting boards may crack or split in the dishwasher, so follow the manufacturer’s directions.

    Other tips for clean cutting

    Buy two different boards. Use one board for meats and the other for ready-to-eat foods like fruits and breads. Get different colors so you can tell them apart.

    Replace your cutting board if it has a lot of wear, cuts or grooves. It can be hard to clean in the small grooves, which can be a hiding spot for germs.

  • Choosing Low-Mercury Fish

    Fish are a healthy choice of protein. They are low-calorie and contain fats that can boost heart health.

    However, fish also contain mercury. Some fish contain high amounts, but others contain very low amounts. Fish absorb mercury from the environment. But they also get it from manufacturing, coal burning and other things.

    The type of mercury found in fish is called methylmercury. Too much methylmercury can damage a person’s brain and nervous system. This is even more dangerous for a developing fetus and for young children.

    Is fish safe to eat?

    Fish is safe and healthy to eat if you choose the right kind of fish and the right amounts. A serving size of fish is four ounces. This is about the size of the palm of your hand. Adults should eat at least two “palm-size” portions each week.

    Children should eat less than this amount. Ask your child’s pediatrician about the recommended amount for their age.

    Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid high-mercury fish. They can eat up to 3 palm-sized servings of low-mercury fish each week.

    Low-mercury fish types

    There are many types of fish that are low in mercury. They include the following:

    *  Anchovies

    *  Cod

    *  Flounder

    *  Haddock

    *  Herring

    *  Oyster

    *  Perch, freshwater and ocean

    *  Pickerel

    *  Pollock

    *  Salmon

    *  Sardines

    *  Scallops

    *  Shrimp

    *  Sole

    *  Tilapia

    *  Tuna, canned light (limit albacore to 1 serving/week)

    *  Whitefish

    High mercury fish to avoid

    The following types of fish are high in mercury. People should not eat these types of fish.

    *  King mackerel

    *  Marlin

    *  Orange roughy

    *  Shark

    *  Swordfish

    *  Tilefish (Gulf of Mexico)

    *  Tuna, bigeye

    Local fishing

    If you like to eat fish caught from local waters, check fish advisories first. Then, eat only one palm-size serving and don’t eat other fish that week.

  • Cholesterol: To Eat Or Not To Eat?

    Not that long ago, eggs were considered taboo, and heart healthy eating meant avoiding cholesterol. However, our understanding of the impact of dietary cholesterol on blood cholesterol has evolved in recent years.

    Instead of worrying about the amount of cholesterol in food, watching your overall fat intake is most important, especially the unhealthy fats. For the best heart protection, you should consume a diet low in unhealthy fats, such as saturated and trans fats.

    Moderation is key. Cholesterol-containing foods can be part of a healthy diet as long as you do not over-consume them.

    Foods that contain cholesterol & unhealthy fats

    *  Egg yolks (egg whites do not contain cholesterol)

    *  Cheese

    *  Butter

    *  Shellfish

    *  Red meat

    *  Full fat milk and yogurt

    *  Fried foods

    *  Processed meats

    *  Most fast foods

    *  Desserts such as cake, cookies, and pies

    Decrease intake of cholesterol & unhealthy fats

    A healthy diet is one high in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If you focus on eating more of these unprocessed, plant foods, you will naturally be eating a diet lower in fat and cholesterol.

    Try these tips to bring more balance to your diet:

    *  Eat 1-2 fruits and vegetables at each meal.

    *  If you consume dairy products, choose fat-free or low-fat.

    *  When you eat meat, choose lean cuts and limit your portion to 3 ounces.

    *  Choose baked over fried foods.

    *  Limit processed meats such as lunch meat, hot dogs, bacon, and salami.

    *  Eat more fiber from fruits, vegetables, oats, and beans.

  • Cataracts Can Be Treated

    The eye has a clear lens inside that allows you to focus on things. But, as we get older, the lens may not be clear anymore. Proteins inside the lens stick together, causing a cloudy spot. This is a cataract.

    Cataracts are common. More than half of people age 80 and over have cataracts or had cataract surgery.

    What causes cataracts?

    Cataracts cannot always be prevented. Many people get them simply from getting older. This is because proteins in the eye’s lens start to break down with time.

    But there are some things you can do to reduce your risk of getting cataracts:

    *  Get regular eye exams.

    *  Don’t smoke – or quit if you do smoke.

    *  Limit or avoid alcohol.

    *  Protect your eyes with proper sunglasses and hats that shield the sun.

    *  Eat a healthy diet and get exercise. This can help prevent diabetes and high blood pressure, which may cause cataracts.

    Do I have cataracts?

    Many people don’t realize they have cataracts. This is because changes in vision happen very slowly over time.

    People who have cataracts may notice:

    *  Colors look faded or yellowed; things look blurry or cloudy

    *  Seeing a “halo” around lights

    *  It’s harder to read without a very bright light

    *  Trouble with night vision

    *  Double vision in one eye

    What can I do about cataracts?

    While cataracts may take away your clear vision, there is good news. Many cataracts can be corrected with surgery.

    The operation usually takes less than an hour. The doctor will replace the cloudy lens with a clear artificial lens. Usually, no stitches are needed. You may also have the surgery without general anesthesia, or being put to sleep. The doctor will numb the eye area so you won’t feel anything.

    People usually have only minor pain afterward. You may need to use eye drops after surgery to help the eye heal, or wear a protective eye shield when you sleep. Your doctor can let you know when it is safe for you to drive and do other activities.

    In most cases, the eye is totally healed within a few weeks and vision is much better.

  • Caring For Toe Injuries

    Toes are an important part of walking and balance. And their bones and ligaments are small, so they can be easily injured.

    Many people think doctors won’t do anything about an injured toe. This is not true. A broken or sprained toe may need medical attention. But minor toe injuries may get better with some simple home care.

    What to do if you hurt your toe

    *  If the pain is not severe, try putting ice on it for 10 minutes at a time. Be careful not to get the toe too cold.

    *  If needed, take an over-the-counter pain medicine.

    *  Stay off the foot if possible. Try to elevate it when sitting down.

    *  Look for signs of bruising and swelling, which could mean a possible sprain or broken toe.

    *  If the pain is severe, contact your doctor or seek urgent medical care.

    *  If pain and swelling don’t get better within two days, see a health care provider.

    *  Elevate the affected toe to help with swelling.

    Sprained vs. broken toe

    A sprain means that the ligaments in the toe have been injured. You can usually walk on a sprained toe, but it may still be very sore from swelling and bruising.

    Sprains may happen when you overstretch the toe during sports, running or jumping. “Turf toe” is a sprain of the big toe that is quite common in athletes.

    If you have a broken toe, you may not be able to move the toe or put weight on it. It may have a lot of swelling and bruising. The pain may not get better, even after a couple of days. Broken toes can happen during sports and activities. They also occur with falls and accidents or when you drop something heavy on your foot.

    Should you get medical care?

    Some minor toe injuries can be treated at home. But toe sprains and breaks can be more serious. Don’t ignore toe pain that lasts more than two days. See a health care provider if you think your toe is sprained or broken.

    If you have diabetes

    Always see a health care provider for any kind of foot or toe injury.

    Anyone, anywhere can help care for a loved one. You don’t have to live in the same town, or even the same state. If you live far away from an older relative, you may wonder how you can help. Long-distance caregiving is possible.

    Before you start

    Does your loved one already have a primary caregiver? Talk to that person about how you can help. It’s usually best to coordinate your efforts with the person who sees your loved one most often.

    If they don’t yet have a caregiver but need one, you can help with that too. Talk to other family members and discuss the options. You may be able to help with finding and hiring a nurse or aide if family members can’t do it.

    Even if you can’t visit often, know that your visits are valuable. It’s time to not only catch up, but to take on some caregiving duties. Maybe you can give the primary caregiver a break while you are there. You can also find out what kinds of things you can do to help when you’re away.

    Options for helping out

    Some ideas for helping your long-distance loved one include:

    *  Helping them manage their finances or bill paying, which often can be done online

    *  Arranging for in-home care such as home health or nursing aides

    *  Ordering medical equipment that they need

    *  Making calls to the pharmacy for medication when they need it

    *  Researching skilled nursing or assisted living facilities

    *  Calling them often to check in and provide emotional support

    *  Contacting their insurance company if there are questions about coverage

    *  Keeping other family members informed about their health and needs

    *  Creating paperwork for an emergency that lists their health conditions and medicines they take
