    Medical costs are expensive. Whether you are in your 50s, 60s, 70s, or older, now is the time to review how you cover them. Now is the time, too, to plan for how they will be paid for in the future. Without health insurance, some persons could lose all their assets if they had to pay for medical expenses.

    Like life insurance, health insurance can be hard to understand. Don’t let it baffle you, though. Find out what you need to know to protect yourself and your assets. Don’t find out you have too little coverage when it’s too late. Use the “Health Insurance Checklist” to keep track of your health care coverage.

  • Plan For Summer Safety

    Home Safety

    *  Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.

    *  Wear sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays.

    *  Learn to swim and teach your children how to swim.

    * Check the depth of the water before diving into a pool. Don’t dive into water that is less than 9 feet deep. Never dive into an above-ground pool.

    Dos

    *  Watch a professional fireworks display in person or on TV.

    *  Wear and have children wear a personal flotation device when you are on a boat, water ski, etc.

    Don’ts

    *  Don’t play with fireworks or let your children play with fireworks.

    *  NEVER leave a child alone near a pool or water, not even for a few seconds.

  • Plan For Happiness During The Holidays

    Connect With Relatives

    If holidays are sad due to a lost loved one, plan to be with other people.

    For many people, holiday times are too hectic and tiring to be enjoyable. For others, living alone or with memories of a lost loved one brings sadness.

    *  Schedule activities you enjoy, but take time to unwind.

    *  Keep from over planning, hosting, and attending too many events.

    *  Lower expectations of having a perfect holiday. Focus on family traditions that are enjoyable, but realistic.

    *  Talk to someone you trust if you are having sad feelings.

  • Plan For Emergencies

    Do you have a plan for what to do about your medicines during an emergency?

    One-week supply:Have a 7-day supply of medications and other medical supplies. Check expiration dates every six months.

    Storage tips:Store medications in labeled, child-proof containers in a dry, cool place. For refrigerated medicines, plan for some temporary storage.

    An important list:Include a medication list (prescription and non-prescription) and phone numbers for your doctors and pharmacies. Include copies of current prescriptions.

    ID cards:Always keep health insurance and prescription drug cards with you to replace damaged or lost medication, if needed.

  • Pedaling Safely With Your Toddler

    It’s easy to equip a bicycle with a child safety seat so your toddler can ride with you. To ensure the safety of your child:

    *  Be sure the seat is properly installed. If you aren’t sure how to install it correctly, consider having someone at a bicycle repair shop do it.

    *  A plastic cover should shield the back wheel, so the child’s clothing doesn’t get caught in the spokes.

    *  The back of the seat should be high enough to support and protect the child’s back and neck, and it should be marked with reflective tape if you ride after dark.

    *  A passenger restraint (safety belt) should fasten over the child’s shoulder.

    *  The seat should have a footrest, and the child’s legs should not hang free.

    Test the bicycle seat by riding without the youngster to be sure it’s securely fastened. When you take your child riding, be sure he or she is wearing a helmet.

    Although estimates vary, as many as 251,000 people a year die in U.S. hospitals due to medical errors, also called Preventable Adverse Events (PAEs).

    Take an active role in every decision about your health care. If needed, have a family member or friend oversee your care.

    “Wrong-site” surgery includes operating on the wrong person, the wrong organ, or the wrong limb.

    Before you are taken into surgery, make sure the surgery is the one scheduled for you. Mark the body part to be operated on, too. Use the marker, etc. the doctor gives you to do this.

  • Patient Rights

    There are a variety of patient’s rights and providers of them. One, called “The Patient Care Partnership” is from the American Hospital Association (AHA). It gives guidelines for both patients and staff to let you know your rights in a hospital. These include:

    *  High-quality hospital care.

    *  A clean and safe environment.

    *  Involvement in your care.

    *  Protection of your privacy.

    *  Preparing you and your family for when you leave the hospital.

    *  Help with your bill and with filing insurance claims.

    Certain hospitals, hospice care providers, U.S. states, and health insurance plans have their own patient’s bill of rights. A Federal Patient’s Bill of Rights to protect the right of patients using health insurance was created at the same time as the Affordable Care Act. Its measures include:

    *  Certain preventive screenings at no cost to patients.

    *  The right to get health insurance in spite of pre-existing medical conditions.

    *  Removal of annual and lifetime dollar limits for essential health care benefits.

    *  The right to an easy-to-understand summary of benefits and coverage.

  • Passive-Aggressivebehavior

    Mental Health

    People with passive-aggressive behaviors show hostility and aggression in passive ways. Their aim is to resist job and social demands. Examples of passive-aggressive behaviors are:

    *  “Forgetting” to do something on purpose

    *  Making a habit of putting off or being late with social and/or job tasks

    *  Failing to do one’s share of the work or doing sub-standard work on purpose

    *  Having a constant negative attitude

    *  Criticizing authority figures, not openly, but in subtle ways

    Signs, Symptoms & Causes

    The goal of passive-aggressive behavior is to frustrate the wishes of others and make others angry. This anger is most often directed at bosses, roommates, spouses, parents, teachers, or anyone who has power or authority. But, sometimes, people are not aware that their behavior is purposeful.

    What leads to passive-aggressive behavior? Some researchers think that these behaviors stem from certain childhood experiences. They believe that parents who were aggressive and exercised complete control over their child did not let the child express himself or herself. This may have pushed the child into adopting passive-aggressive behavior patterns to cope. If, for example, the child openly disagreed with the parent and was punished for doing so, the child learned to substitute passive resistance for active resistance.

    A person who shows a lot of passive-aggressive behavior can have a Passive-Aggressive Personality Disorder. A person with this disorder:

    *  Is irritable, defensive, and resentful

    *  Lacks self-confidence

    *  Has a hard time getting pleasure from relationships with others

    *  Feels others are making unreasonable demands on him or her, but thinks he or she is doing a better job than what they are given credit for

    *  Blames others for his or her problems

    *  Is not aware that his or her self-defeating behaviors are part of their personality

    Questions to Ask

    Self-Help

    *  Take an assertiveness training course – these are offered at many hospitals, colleges, high schools, churches, and community education programs. Assertiveness training can help you express your feelings in the proper manner instead of using “hidden aggression.”

    *  Stand back and try to look at your problems in an objective way. Determine if your own actions contribute to your problems, not the actions of everyone else.

    *  Confront your problems. Make your needs, desires, and feelings known to others instead of holding them in. Do this for one problem at a time. For example, if you stall on doing a project:

    – Break it down into smaller parts.

    – Make a check list to complete each part and check each item off as it is completed.

    – Give yourself a meaningful reward with each item checked off.

    – Focus on pleasing yourself with each completed task, not making someone else mad if the task is not done.

    *  Seek professional counseling if Self-Help do not improve your problem. You may need the help of a skilled therapist to help you get in touch with the underlying anger and pain which causes you to act in a passive-aggressive way.

    What You Can Do to Help Someone

    *  Learn to recognize the signs of a Passive-Aggressive Personality Disorder. If you think that your friend or relative may have this disorder, encourage them to see their physician or counselor. Do so in a caring and assertive way. Let the person’s physician know about your observations if you are the person’s parent or spouse.

    *  Encourage the person to take an assertiveness training course or other course that teaches effective ways to communicate.

    *  Don’t make excuses for your friend’s or relative’s behavior. Don’t do their work for them or “bail them out” when they do not take care of their own responsibilities.
