    Sometimes it’s hard to know if you’re in a healthy relationship. This can include a romantic partner, friend or family member.

    Know the good

    Some signs of a healthy relationship include:

    *  You feel good about yourself when you’re around that person.

    *  You feel safe telling them how you feel about things.

    *  They listen to you, and you listen to them.

    *  You feel valued by them.

    *  You trust them, and don’t think they would do something to betray you.

    *  You can disagree or argue, but you don’t insult each other. Neither person uses personal attacks.

    Unsafe signs

    Ask yourself whether you see any of these signs of an unhealthy or abusive relationship:

    *  They say hurtful things to you. They make you feel bad about yourself.

    *  They stop showing love or care when they are mad.

    *  They blame you for feeling bad about something they did or said. They may say you’re “too sensitive,” or, “you made me do it.”

    *  They hurt you physically, such as pushing or hitting.

    *  They keep you from seeing family or friends.

    *  They threaten you or try to control you. They want you to fear them.

    Every workplace is part of a broader community of people. As such, it should reflect the diversity around it. A more diverse workplace benefits both the company and its employees.

    What is diversity?

    The practice of involving people from a variety of backgrounds, including race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and disability.

    Why does it matter?

    To be effective, a workplace should reflect the diversity of its clients, local community, and broader society. When people from different backgrounds work together, they are ideally placed to provide efficient and equitable service.

    How does it benefit a company?

    Establishing policies that value diversity creates a corporate environment that promotes collaboration, innovation, and new perspectives.

    How does it help employees?

    Working in a diverse, inclusive environment allows each employee to rise to their full potential and maximize their skills. Diverse companies build on the unique strengths of each individual.

  • A Dozen Rights Every Patient Should Expect

    What rights and privileges can you expect from a hospital when you become a patient? According to the American Hospital Association (AHA), there are specific standards of care that all patients are entitled to. The AHA has developed a voluntary code-the Patient’s Bill of Rights-that presents guidelines for both staff and patients.

    1.  You have the right to considerate and respectful care.

    2.  You have the right to obtain from your physician complete, current information concerning your diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in terms you can reasonably be expected to understand.

    3.  You have the right to receive from your physician information necessary to give informed consent prior to the start of any procedure and/or treatment.

    4.  You have the right to refuse treatment to the extent permitted by law, and to be informed of the medical consequences of your action.

    5.  You have the right to privacy concerning your own medical care program.

    6.  You have the right to expect that all communications and records pertaining to your care should be treated as confidential.

    7.  You have the right to expect that, within its capacity, a hospital must make a reasonable response to your request for services.

    8.  You have the right to obtain information about any relationship of your hospital to other health care and educational institutions insofar as your care is concerned.

    9.  You have the right to be advised if the hospital proposes to engage in or perform human experimentation affecting your care or treatment.

    10. You have the right to expect reasonable continuity of care.

    11. You have the right to examine and receive an explanation of your bill regardless of the source of payment.

    12. You have the right to know what hospital rules and regulations apply to your conduct as a patient.

    There are a variety of patient’s rights and providers of them. One, called “The Patient Care Partnership” is from the American Hospital Association (AHA). It gives guidelines for both patients and staff to let you know your rights in a hospital. These include:

    *  High-quality hospital care.

    *  A clean and safe environment.

    *  Involvement in your care.

    *  Protection of your privacy.

    *  Preparing you and your family for when you leave the hospital.

    *  Help with your bill and with filing insurance claims.

    Certain hospitals, hospice care providers, U.S. states, and health insurance plans have their own patient’s bill of rights. A Federal Patient’s Bill of Rights to protect the right of patients using health insurance was created at the same time as the Affordable Care Act. Its measures include:

    *  Certain preventive screenings at no cost to patients.

    *  The right to get health insurance in spite of pre-existing medical conditions.

    *  Removal of annual and lifetime dollar limits for essential health care benefits.

    *  The right to an easy-to-understand summary of benefits and coverage.

  • 6 Simple Steps To A Healthier Marriage

    Having a healthy, supportive marriage is important to your overall well-being. But the stresses of life, work, family, and day-to-day problems can put a strain on even the best marriage at times.

    Fortunately, there are some ways you can help keep your marriage strong – or work on problems before they become major issues. Here are some tips from the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center:

    1. Make every effort to keep your commitment.

    Marriage will have “good times and bad,” and you need to realize that challenges will happen. The key is to work through them and be aware that everyone has disagreements and difficulties. No marriage is perfect, but with extra effort from both partners, you can make yours last.

    2. Make time for each other.

    Even when you’re overwhelmed with work, children, or other tasks, don’t forget about your marriage. Set aside time for a dinner alone or even a weekend getaway if you can. If that’s not possible, have 15 to 30 minutes of time to talk and connect each day – without TV or cell phones.

    3. Have a sense of humor.

    Life’s little mishaps are easier to take when you can laugh at them. Mistakes that don’t really hurt anyone don’t have to turn into arguments. Don’t focus on who’s to blame. Laugh at it if you can, and work on a solution together. Forgive your spouse (and yourself!) and try to find the humor in the situation.

    4. Communication is key.

    This is an important aspect of any marriage. Talk about what’s bothering you – and what you love. Listen to what your spouse is saying, and don’t be quick to defend yourself. No one has to “win” an argument. If you both listen and respect each other, a solution or compromise can usually be found.

    5. Do “little” things for your spouse.

    Make a favorite meal for the other person, do the dishes without being asked, or leave a love note. These small things can add up to big happiness. Just showing your spouse that you care about him or her will help build your marriage each day.

    6. Choose your battles.

    Before you get angry about something, ask yourself if it’s worth an argument. If it’s important to you, approach the subject calmly and be honest. If not, take a deep breath and focus your energy on better things.

    Marriage isn’t always easy, but working to keep it strong and healthy can have big payoffs. People in healthy marriages have better mental health and may even live longer. Give your marriage the attention it deserves, and you’ll both enjoy the benefits.

  • 6 Ways To Be A Good Houseguest

    Each year, millions of Americans travel and visit friends and family members for the holidays. And with so many overnight visits this time of year, being a courteous houseguest is a skill that may come in handy. If you’re staying with a friend or family member, remember these tips:

    *Make plans well in advance.Don’t expect family members to drop everything at the last minute for your visit. Give them several weeks notice of when you will be coming (if possible) and don’t arrive earlier or stay longer than planned.

    *Consider a small gift.A bouquet of fresh flowers, a book, or an attractive fruit bowl are good host gifts to consider.

    *  Pay attention to house rules. Are there shoes by the door? Then you should take yours off when you enter.

    *Offer to pitch in.Ask if you can pick up some groceries at the store, or offer to pay for meals when going out.

    *Clean up after yourself.Don’t expect the host to do it all. Help clear the table after meals and wash dishes. The day of your departure, strip the sheets off the bed and offer to throw them in the laundry. Wipe off the bathroom counters after you use them. Put things back where you found them.

    *Send a note afterward.When you return home, send a short but sincere thank you note to your host.

  • Be A Good Sport

    Whether you’ve never had a sports injury and you’re trying to keep it that way or you’ve had an injury and don’t want another, the following tips from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases can help:

    *  Avoid bending knees past 90 degrees when doing half knee bends.

    *  Avoid twisting knees by keeping feet as flat as possible during stretches.

    *  When jumping, land with your knees bent.

    *  Do warm-up exercises not just before vigorous activities like running, but also before less vigorous ones such as golf.

    *  Don’t overdo.

    *  Do warm-up stretches before activity. Stretch the Achilles tendon, hamstring, and quadriceps areas and hold the positions. Don’t bounce.

    *  Cool down following vigorous sports. For example, after a race, walk or walk/jog for 5 minutes so your pulse comes down gradually.

    *  Wear properly fitting shoes that provide shock absorption and stability.

    *  Use the softest exercise surface available, and avoid running on hard surfaces like asphalt and concrete. Run on flat surfaces. Running uphill may increase the stress on the Achilles tendon and the leg itself.

  • Forget Shouting

    While many people try to steer clear of arguments with family members, two Vanderbilt University philosophy professors offer a better solution.

    Scott F. Aikin and Robert B. Talisse co-wrote Why We Argue (and How We Should): A Guide to Political Disagreement. The trend to avoid arguments with loved ones has more to do with how bad we are at arguing than how strong our beliefs are, according to Aikin. “The better solution would be to improve our skill at making arguments in ways that allow for better, more reasoned exchange.”

    Aikin and Talisse suggest the following:

    *  Remember that reasonable and intelligent people disagree about important matters. Keep this in mind even when your relative says something appalling.

    *  When arguing, be sure to acknowledge your family member’s good points.

    *  Be prepared to say what it would take for you to change your mind. Consider what evidence would make your view wrong.

    *  Know the weak points about your view. Be able to articulate what the best arguments against your view are.

    “Acknowledging the opposition’s good points and seeing troubles for your own side are too often taken to be a sign of weakness,” Aikin said. “But it’s that attitude that actually makes us bad at argument and makes argumentative exchange so unpleasant and dogmatic. Instead, these habits make exchanges more reasonable and productive.”
